Capturing the Dance of the Aurora: A Photographer's Guide to Shooting the Northern Lights

The ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, has captivated humanity for centuries. Dancing across the night sky in a mesmerizing display of colors, the Aurora is a phenomenon that beckons photographers from around the globe to try and capture its magic through their lenses. In this guide, we'll explore the art and science of photographing the Northern Lights, from preparation to execution, helping you to immortalize this celestial spectacle in stunning images.

Understanding the Aurora: Before embarking on your Northern Lights photography adventure, it's essential to understand the science behind this awe-inspiring phenomenon. The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with atoms and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the emission of light. The colors produced depend on the type of gas and altitude at which the collisions occur, with green and pink being the most common hues.

Preparation:

1. Location: Choose a location away from light pollution with a clear, unobstructed view of the northern horizon. Last night we had a spectacular show right in our back yard in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
2. Timing: Plan your shoot. They are more active in the winter months when the nights are long and dark, increasing your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights. But they can be seen all year long and I wouldn't be surprised if we see them more frequently in the next few years.
3. Weather: Monitor weather forecasts for clear skies and geomagnetic activity predictions, which indicate the likelihood of Aurora activity. I use an app called Aurora Forecast.
4. Equipment: Invest in a sturdy tripod to keep your camera steady during long exposures, and use a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive sky. I also recommend a trigger for your camera and a red light to help you see. Additionally, pack spare batteries and dress warmly to endure the cold temperatures typically associated with Aurora hunting.

Camera Settings:

1. ISO: Start with a low ISO setting (e.g., ISO 400) to minimize noise in your images. Then adjust as you need.  The image I have with this blog was ISO 1600.
2. Aperture: Use a wide aperture (e.g., f/2.8) to allow more light to reach the sensor and capture faint details of the Aurora.
3. Shutter Speed: Experiment with long exposures ranging from a few seconds to several minutes to achieve the desired brightness and motion blur of the Northern Lights. The image shown here was at 4 seconds because the lights were so bright. I have had to shoot at 30 seconds to get a good photo in the past.
4. Manual Focus: Set your lens to manual focus and infinity to ensure sharpness in your images, as autofocus may struggle in low-light conditions. I highly recommend setting up back button focus on your camera. This is a game changer.

Composition:

1. Foreground Interest: Incorporate interesting foreground elements such as trees, mountains, or structures to add depth and context to your Aurora photos.
2. Rule of Thirds: Apply the rule of thirds to compose visually appealing images, positioning the Aurora along the grid lines or intersections.
3. Experimentation: Don't be afraid to experiment with different compositions, angles, and perspectives to create unique and compelling images of the Northern Lights. Remember that rules are made to be broken :)
